When do you get your immigration case number?

because we have turned everything in that they asked for and we still don't have our case number my step dad is an american and yes he did adopt me. the attorney said it should only take 6 months the most for us to get our temporary card or what ever it is which allows us to get a job or whatever in the states. but its been 6 months and still we haven't got anything what is wrong?
