Does anyone know some Chinese dating customs?

When a couple starts dating Chinese people are very sensitive in meeting the parents. Customarily a Chinese person would officially introduce a friend of the opposite sex to the family only when he/she thinks the relationship might become serious. By this I mean a Chinese friend usually does not mind meeting your parents casually say on the streets, but going to your home indicates a big step forward. Also note that I mentioned thinking the "relationship MIGHT become serious", there is no commitment whatsoever, but not wanting to meet your parents does not necessarily mean he's not into you. At the same time I think your friend is also quite shy, or even feeling a bit inferior. As a Chinese myself, I can understand how intimidating it is for a Chinese guy to be dating an American female.
